About the Laguna

We opened our hospedaje here at the Laguna de Apoyo after falling under its spell in 2005. It’s a special place in that it strikes a perfect balance between having many interesting things to do, while at the same time providing a beautifully tranquilo atmosphere to relax and unwind in - and local legends claim even the water has healing properties.

The laguna was formed by one of the largest volcanic eruptions in Nicaraguan history over 21,000 years ago. The result is this spectacularly lush crater lake, 6km in diameter and with a depth estimated to be 200m at its centre (supposedly the deepest body of water in all of Central America). The list of local flora and fauna is long and varied, but for sure the most famous residents of the laguna are the howler monkeys. If you have never heard a howler monkey before then you are in for a treat … it's like something out of a movie!
